Welcome
Thank you for visiting my site. On this page I tell you a bit about myself and my business and business practices. Although Mary Newberry Editorial Services is a sole proprietorship, I have an extended community of colleagues. I am active in professional organizations, such as the Indexing Society of Canada / Société canadienne d'indexation (ISC/SCI), where I am currently co-president, and in the Editors Association of Canada / Association canadienne des réviseurs (EAC).
Since 2000, after completing a BA in political science and literary studies and an MA in English and many years running my own and other people’s businesses, I have worked full time as a freelance editor, indexer, and teacher. My early passion was dancing, and it’s the self-discipline I learned then that is probably my greatest indirect asset now.
I work in various areas of the humanities, on academic, financial, government, literary, and general interest texts, and the occasional memoir. My clients are individuals as well as companies, corporations, and institutions.
Scholarly editing is one of my specialty areas, as a copy editor and for substantive and stylistic work, such as revising theses into book manuscripts. I’m often asked to edit for clarity and concision, particularly when English is not the author’s first language. (I only work on material for publication, not texts that are to be marked.)
About half of my time is spent indexing for books and online texts. Beginning January 2010, I will be teaching indexing in a course I developed for the Ryerson’s Publishing Program.

“Thank you very much for the tremendously thoughtful and thorough job you have done. I'm very grateful that I have been able to work with you on this and that my book will have such a fine index as a result.” |
